How Google’s Gemini Nano AI Makes Chrome Smarter Against Online Scams & Phishing in 2025

Google is adding a smart new layer of protection to its Chrome browser - and it’s powered by AI. With the release of Chrome version 137, the company has started testing Gemini Nano, a lightweight version of its large language model (LLM), to help spot and block online scams, spam, and phishing attacks.

What Is Gemini Nano and Why Is It Important?

Gemini Nano is a small but powerful AI model that works directly on your device. Instead of relying on remote servers to detect threats, this AI scans websites in real time, right from your computer. That means it can react faster to new scams - especially helpful because many scam sites only stay online for a few minutes.

This new feature is part of Chrome’s Enhanced Protection mode, which already offers the highest level of security in the browser. According to Google, it’s twice as effective as the standard protection when it comes to spotting phishing attempts and scammy content.

How Does It Work?

When you visit a website that looks suspicious, Gemini Nano quietly kicks in. It checks the page for signs that it might be dangerous - for example, if it’s pretending to be a tech support service to trick you. Then it sends that info to Google’s Safe Browsing system, which decides whether to block the page and show you a warning.

The best part? It’s all done locally on your device, meaning it’s fast and doesn’t compromise your privacy.

Starting with Tech Support Scams - But More Coming Soon

Right now, Gemini Nano is focused on identifying fake tech support scams on Chrome for desktop. But Google says more scam types will be added soon - such as fake package tracking links or toll payment scams. And Android users, don’t worry - the feature is expected to arrive on Chrome for Android later in 2025.

Extra Help on Android, Too

Google is also working on smarter notification warnings for Android users. If a sketchy website tries to send a push notification, you’ll get a heads-up with options to block, view, or allow it. You stay in control while getting better protection.

AI Making a Big Impact

This move is part of a larger effort by Google to use AI in the fight against fraud. The company’s latest Fighting Scams in Search report reveals that their AI-powered tools now catch 20 times more scam websites than before. They’ve also managed to cut down fake airline customer service scams in search results by over 80%.

A Step Toward a Safer Web

With scams becoming more clever every day, Google’s use of on-device AI like Gemini Nano is a smart way to stay one step ahead. It helps users detect threats in real-time, offers better privacy, and makes the internet just a little safer for everyone.
